Design is everybody's thinking when it comes to build a structure especially for our own house in exterior and interior on it as well as the landscape around the house. Even a small scale project you can't scape the design stage of such project with regards to the budget. You cannot rely on your design if you are luck of budget itself. However, if you want the design that you have sketched, go ahead finalize and build it. 

In reality sometimes other people in some other countries would want to make the design first especially for their house ignoring the budget but it will follow they said, but in the long run they only just keeping it for the future use. On the other hand, some people take their first step to build the structure without the design and even ignoring the cost of it. But frankly speaking, you have a problem on this step, because your project has no direction, and you don't even know how and when to finish it, and even you have finished it, i don't think if it is good looking and its just wasting time, money & effort. In fact, there's so many structures out there maybe you can say had not finished yet, because of the problems as stated earlier.

Good looking house must starts first with Planning & Designing together with the cost as well as the schedule. However, supervision and management matters to this during construction, because poor supervision of the project will only fall to poor results of your plan & design.

Now, plan & design your dream house or whatever you want to do, there's a lot of references out there even on internet you can get ideas when & how to start your Planning & Designing Stage as well as the cost itself. But if you can afford, you can hire an expert or an Architect. Remember that a good result of what you do come from a good plan.
